A few weeks ago we shared the genesis of the Sheep Project, an effort in Kiryamo, Rwanda to cultivate economic stability through a community sheep farm. We’ll be continuing to keep you updated on the major advancements made, but this week is all about focusing on the impact it’s already having on the individual scale.

Murekatete Bellancille is 36 years old, married, and mother to three daughters.

Three weeks ago, she joined the project as a cultivator, preparing the land to sustain a flock. When asked if she was “excited to work there” she enthusiastically replied “Yes!” Bellancille is motivated to improve the lives of her family. The income she receives will be used toward the school fees for her children, medical insurance, and improvements to their home.

Bellancille also feels the excitement of her neighbors. “They are all so happy for the project,” she told us, explaining that her community is keen to learn modern shepherding practices, eventually hoping to expand into keeping goats as well.

Her ultimate dream is to see all three children earn Bachelor’s degrees, and has confidence that this will be fulfilled in due time.

Bellancille is one of many lives in Kiryamo to already see positive change. We are so excited to continue to track this inspirational venture!
